One of the birthplaces of Chinese Civilization and ranking among the seven ancient capitals in China, Hangzhou stands out as the "Famous Town of Southeast China". Hangzhou was a marvel to 13th century Italian traveler Marco Polo who called it "the most graceful and splendid city of the world".

Today Hangzhou is a vibrant and growing economic center, granted the titles of a Top Ten Globally Influential City, a China Top Ten Innovation City, a China Top Ten Smart City, and is the world's first pilot city for sustainable development. Hangzhou was honored as "China happiest city" 13 years in a row.

It is home to many large companies in a whole range of high-tech industries, including Alibaba Group.

Hangzhou in Zhejiang province has rolled out a new wave of preferential exit-entry policies covering foreign expats'visas, long-term stay and permanent residency since last December in an effort to attract and retain high-caliber foreign professionals, as the eastern Chinese city seeks to emulate better-known metropolises such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
